Ducklings Believe The Man Is Their Guide

152

Their Chicks — ducklings and chickens — are born pubescent, sighted and from the first minutes of life are ready to follow the mother. The main task of the mother-duck — to transfer their children to a safe place. As a rule, it is a pond where Chicks can find food, as well as, when attacked by a predator, dive under water and then hide in the thickets of reeds.

Although ducks are waterfowl, they often build nests away from the water. For example, the usual Mallard in cities lays eggs in nests built on wasteland, as well as in the old crow nests in tree crowns. After birth, the Chicks have access to water, often over several kilometers, including through the thick overgrown grass.
