Horses sleep little and weak. At the slightest noises, the animal is awakened in time to escape. Therefore, for them a great advantage — to sleep standing. First of all, the rest are old or sick horses, because they are difficult to climb. Horses younger sleep mostly lying down.
However, the animals of one group never sleep at the same time. At least one of them shows the watch standing and in case of danger alerts the others. First the horse raises the front part of the body, and then sharply jump up, throwing back. A horse can really relax standing due to the unique “locking” mechanism of the knee joint, which allows it to stay on my feet very long time and thus relax the muscles.
