Genevieve Via Cava was an ordinary teacher with an extraordinary secret. Genevieve spent 45 years of her life working as a special education teacher in Dumont, New Jersey. She clipped coupons, tried to save her money and live a humble life. Genevieve never took vacations and usually wore the same small rotation of clothing. She really scrimped and saved all the pennies she could. Genevieve had no immediate family but she considered her special education kids part of her family. Helping them grow and develop was her real passion in life. It’s where she came alive!
This kind-hearted human loved working with her students more than anything else in the world. In fact, even after she retired in 1990, Genevieve would still regularly head into school to check on the students and see how the classes were going. A few weeks after she passed, the school administrators received a cheque from Via Cava’s estate attorney.
“Estate attorney?!” they pondered, “We didn’t even know she had an estate!”
That’s when Genevieve Via Cava’s phenomenal secret came to light. The modest-living and humble human being that had worked at the school for 45 years had left them a friendly donation. The special education students and educators at the school were a family to her, so naturally, she wanted to leave them something to help out in the future after her passing.
