It was just another grocery day for Eddie Olivarez, a resident of Arcadia, California. He went to the grocery store, collected things he needed and was returning when he noticed a shoebox on the ground near the dumpsters. Instinctively, instead of tossing the box off, he opened it, and found the biggest surprise! A tiny puppy lied inside.
He had no idea how the puppy had managed to survive, given that it was an unusually hot day with 97 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and a bloody wound on his head with his right eye popped out. He clearly needed expert care.
Therefore, Olivarez contacted Piper Wood, the founder of Hand in Paw, a rescue group in California.
Wood explained, “He [the puppy] had blood on top of his head, and his little eye was popping out. And the dog was so weak. I don’t know when the last time he ate was or had water … he was very anaemic and almost going into seizures.
Wood suspects that the puppy is a Shih Tzu mix and too young to be without his mother.
“He doesn’t even have teeth yet,” Wood said. “He’s like 4 or 5 weeks, so he definitely needs to be with his mother.”
Despite being unsure who abandoned the puppy, Wood reckons it’s a backyard breeder who didn’t fancy him after his injury.
She explained, “I see this kind of thing a lot. When people breed their dogs illegally … they’re not kept in good conditions, and they just want to make money off of them. And often times, they’ll sell them very underage.”
